The conceptual legacy of the USSR and its effects on the politics of Russia and other post-Soviet states; formal and informal mechanisms of state control in these same states.

Current Projects
“Mechanisms of Power in Post-Soviet Ukraine: Evidence from the Ukrainian Melnychenko Recordings” (an archive and book project based on secretly recorded conversations in the presidential offices of Ukraine).
