27th Arden House Conference
The 27th Arden House Conference, sponsored by the
Davis Center and Columbia University's Harriman Institute, will
take place April 16-18, 2004 in Harriman, New York. The title of
this year's conference is "The USA and Russia: Elections, Energy,
Oligarchs and Investment."
In a January 26 article in Izvestia, Secretary
of State Colin Powell took Russia to task for what he saw as its
retreat from democracy and the market. Coming after the December
Duma elections and before the election for president, these were
strong words. Just where is Russia heading and what are the implications
for U.S.Russian relations?
We will examine these and other issues affecting Russian economic
and political trends as well as the prospects for U.S.Russian
relations on April 16-18, at our 27th annual Arden House Conference.
Sponsored by both the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies
at Harvard and the Harriman Institute at Columbia, the sessions
bring together specialists and practitioners from both Russia and
the West in an atmosphere of informality and interaction, which
facilitates the free exchange of ideas and differences of opinion.
In addition to specialists from Harvard and Columbia, other speakers
will include Andrei Illarionov, President Putins chief economic
advisor, Mikhail Margelov, a Putin advisor and the Chairman of the
Committee for Foreign Affairs of the Council of Federation, Boris
Nemtsov, Chairman of the liberal party Union of Right Forces and
Richard Matzke from the petroleum industry.
As usual the conference will be held at Arden House, Averell Harrimans
old family estate. Located an hour and twenty minutes from Manhattan,
just off the New York State Thruway, the conference will begin Friday
evening, April 16th and adjourn after lunch on Sunday. All meals
and housing will be at Arden House and are included in the conference
fee (see registration form). The facilities at Arden House are outstanding
and provide an unusual opportunity to interact with other attendees.
The conference brings together an interesting mix of representatives
from the business, governmental, Harvard and Columbia worlds. We
hope that you and/or your associates can join us for what promises
to be one of the most interesting of the twenty-six such conferences
we have had.
