"Iran and the new geopolitics of energy in the Persian Gulf." In the standoff over sanctions and the nuclear deal, Iran changed its strategy in May 2019. This ushered in a new phase in the geopolitics of energy in the Persian Gulf. Energy trade and infrastructure became targets for attacks as Tehran seeks to form a link between US economic sanctions, nonproliferation and regional security. Against this backdrop, the comment contributes to the Davis Center’s energy project by providing analysis and commentary on the drivers behind the new Iranian strategy. It will examine the motivation for Iran to pursue a more assertive strategy, discuss the rationale of Tehran’s new approach, and assess the implications for energy and security in the Persian Gulf.
