James Browning graduated in 2015 from Carleton College, where he worked as a Russian language tutor and department assistant, and majored in history and Russian. His senior comprehensive projects involved working on a translation of a book on crematoria in the Soviet Union and writing a research paper on Russian nationalism under the 1917 Provisional Government. Following graduation, James accepted a Fulbright grant to teach English at Volgograd State Technical University in Volgograd, Russia. His main research interests include the development of a Russian imperial identity and Russian patriotic culture and nationalism in the years immediately following the collapse of the Russian Empire.
