Steve Swerdlow, Esq. is a human rights lawyer and Associate Professor of the Practice of Human Rights in the Department of Political and International Relations at the University of Southern California. A human rights lawyer and expert on the former Soviet region, he teaches international human rights law, human rights research and advocacy, and human rights in Eurasia. Swerdlow was a Senior Central Asia researcher at Human Rights Watch from 2010-2019, founding its Kyrgyzstan field office and was earlier based in Kazakhstan. Swerdlow has worked with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the International Labour Organization (ILO), and International Organization for Migration (IOM). He regularly publishes on human rights issues in Eurasia and US foreign policy.
