Matilda (Матильда, 2017) tells the story of the romantic relationship between the heir to the Russian throne, Nikolai Romanov, and the ballerina of the Imperial Theater, Matilda Kshesinskaya, from 1890 until the coronation of Nikolai and his wife Alexandra Feodorovna in 1896. The film has garnered considerable controversy in Russia as some, particularly within the Russian Orthodox community, feel the film besmirches the memory of Nicholas II, who was canonized in the year 2000.
