How are the militaries and security services of Central Asia evolving more than three decades after independence, and why have some forces modernized and widened their remit while others remain hollowed out or primarily inward-looking? This panel examines the force structures, budgets, and doctrines of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, highlighting how domestic politics, regional threat perceptions, and security partnerships with actors such as Russia, China, Turkey, and the EU are shaping each state's divergent trajectories.
