When Daniel Rosenblum arrived in Uzbekistan as U.S. Ambassador in May 2019, his family, friends, and colleagues expected him to carry out a conventional diplomatic assignment, including promoting U.S. exports and investment, addressing shared security challenges, and advocating for human rights. They did not expect Russian-supported media outlets to portray his mission to Tashkent as part of a “secret” agenda to destabilize Central Asia. In his talk, Ambassador Rosenblum will discuss how he and his Embassy team responded to the Russian disinformation apparatus and its “firehose of falsehood” by employing a range of “soft power” tools. He will also examine how these diplomatic tools have evolved over the past two years and consider the implications for U.S. foreign policy interests in Central Asia.
