Imperiia Studio: Session I
Have you ever wondered what you could do with a historical map (other than hang it on your wall)? Over four sessions we will work with a beautiful, highly detailed plan of Odesa/Odessa published in 1894. We will study the map’s structure and content and go through the process of pulling it apart (and putting it back together again). This will be a light introduction to spatial thinking and GIS skills. You will come away knowing more about late imperial Odessa than you ever thought possible, and with a decent sense of the work involved in treating maps as data. The ability to read Russian will come in handy and you will need to bring a laptop, but otherwise there are no requirements. Because we will be working together, participants must commit to attending all four sessions (October 16, 23, 30, and November 6). You are welcome to sign up in pairs – so long as one of you attends all will be well.
