In Honor of Spring, a Smile from Bishkek

A mural from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, raised our spirits as the pandemic began to disrupt normal life.

When we at the Davis Center were laying out our 2020 calendar, making sure to include all Central Asian public holidays, U.S. public holidays, and Harvard dates, we couldn’t imagine the year would unfold like this...

The normal flow has been disrupted, the campus is empty, all events—including our Nauryz/Nooruz/Navruz/Novruz/Navruz celebration—cancelled.

But let me share this March image with you. It’s a photo of the mural on the side of a building in Bishkek created by the street art group DOXA, and taken by REECA alum Kristin Torres. It was everybody’s favorite when we were putting together our calendar, because it’s so beautiful and cheerful.

Let’s hope by next spring life will normalize, but we will be wiser after this experience and much more appreciative of big and small joys of everydayness...
