Professor Fyodor Kondrashov heads the Evolutionary and Synthetic Biology Unit at the Okinawa Institute for Science and Technology. The unit combines theory, computation, field work, and experimental and synthetic biology, striving to understand the evolution of living forms and to use that understanding to design novel biological systems. Previously, Kondrashov held positions at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria in Vienna and the Center for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona. He earned his Ph.D. in 2008 from University of California San Diego, where he worked on endangered endemic Arctic bird species, which continues to be an important aspect of his research.
