Maria Lipman is the editor of Russia.Post, published by the Institute of European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (IERES) at George Washington University, where she is also a visiting scholar. Lipman’s fields of interest include state-society relations, media, and politics of history.
From 1995 until 2019 Lipman was editor or deputy editor of various Russian-language publications; in 2003-2014 she was also an associate at the Carnegie Moscow Center (Russian branch of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace), where she published the Pro et Contra journal. Most recently, she was the editor of the English-language Point & Counterpoint, published online by IERES, and produced a PONARS Eurasia podcast also under the auspices of IERES.
In 2017-2019, Lipman taught courses on today’s Russia at Indiana University (Bloomington) and Grinnell College (Iowa). From 2001 to 2011, Lipman wrote a column on Russia for The Washington Post. From 2012 till 2017, she wrote a blog for The New Yorker online. She has also contributed to a variety of Russian and U.S. publications.
Lipman writes capsule reviews of books about Russia and Eastern Europe for Foreign Affairs and has co-authored several pieces for the magazine since Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
