Leverhulme Early Career Fellow, Queen Mary University (London)

Petr Budrin obtained his doctorate in modern languages from the University of Oxford in 2021. Prior to joining Queen Mary as a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University. His research was published in Slavic and East European Journal, Novoe Literaturnoe Obozrenie, and The Shandean. His first monograph, Laurence Sterne and his Readers in Soviet Russia, forthcoming from Oxford University Press, explores the translations and interpretations of the eighteenth-century British writer Laurence Sterne in Soviet Russia during the 1920s-30s. By providing a microhistory of reader responses to Sterne and introducing a range of previously unpublished archival materials (translations, illustrations, interpretations, and personal correspondence), it sheds light on the mechanisms of cultural transfer and on the place of translated literature in the broader Soviet canon.
