Member of the Board of Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom and the Board of the Free Russia Foundation

Graduated from Moscow Lomonosov State University in 1986 and spent 3,5 years in the Central Economic-Mathematical Institute, USSR Academy of Sciences, where he made his Ph.D. In the 1990s, he was in public service in Russia being a Senior expert in the Commission on economic reform in the Government of the USSR, deputy minister of finance of Russia in charge of budgetary planning and tax policy, and first deputy Governor of the Central bank of Russia in charge of monetary and foreign exchange policy and settlement system. Being in the Central bank he served as a member of the Boards of directors for Sberbank, VTB bank, Mosnarbank (London), and BCEN-Eurobank (Paris).

Afterward, he spent ten years in private business being a Managing director of Interros Holding. At the same time, he served as a Chairman of the Board of Directors for Power Machines and Open Investment and as a member of the Boards of directors for Norilsk Nickel and Rosbank. In 2004-2006 Sergey was the President of the investment boutique Antanta Capital, and in 2006-2008 acted as the President and CEO of Merrill Lynch Russia.

From 2008 – to 2014, Sergey Aleksashenko was a Director of macroeconomic research at the Higher School of Economics. At the same time, he served as a member of the Boards of directors for Aeroflot-Russian Airlines, United Grain Company, and United Aircraft Corporation.

In 2014 he reallocated to Washington DC, where until September 2019 was a Nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Currently is an independent consultant.

In 2015-2020 he advised on different aspects of economic transformation to the National bank, Ministry of Finance, and the Government of Ukraine.

Sergey is a Member of the Board of Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom and the Board of the Free Russia Foundation.
