Sufian Zhemukhov is an award-winning author and performer. He received the 2020 J. J. Reneaux Emerging Artist Award at the National Storytelling Network Festival, "to a storyteller of major and unique performing talent." He is The Moth Champion and winner at the 2018 National Storytelling Festival's Story Slam. Sufian’s solo shows, "From Russia Without Love," "Flirting Like an American" and "Soviet Boy With Magic Powers," have been featured at festivals in Washington, DC, Rochester, NY and Cincinnati, OH. Sufian's stories are based on his personal experience as a first-generation immigrant and associate research professor of international affairs at George Washington University. His recent book, Mass Religious Ritual and Intergroup Tolerance (Cambridge University Press), won the 2019 Best Book Award at the International Studies Association.
