This year, the Davis Center's Program on Georgian Studies has launched a new initiative called Artist in Residence. A Georgian artist is invited to spend three weeks at the center. Our first visitor is Nana Janelidze, one of Georgia's best-known film directors and former director of the Georgian Film Center. Ms. Janelidze will be bringing three films, two of which she directed, to show at the Davis Center on March 27, March 28, and April 2. After the films, Ms. Janelidze will be available to talk about them, the Georgian film industry, and the role of movies in Georgian culture and politics.
"Monanieba" ("Repentance"), made in 1984 and released three years later amid Mikhail Gorbachev's glasnost campaign, was directed by the acclaimed Georgian director Tengiz Abuladze. Ms. Janelidze Nana Janelidze was a screenwriter, assistant director, and music designer for this film, which went on to win the Palme d'Or, jury's Grand Prix and other prizes at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival, followed by a Golden Globe nomination and six Nika awards in 1988, including one for best screenplay. The film is now considered a classic and, at the time of its release, had great political significance in the battle for greater openness and political transformation in the USSR.
