The Tajiks, as Central Asia's Persian-speakers are known, were considered the custodians of Islamic high culture across the region for more than a thousand years. Today they are a marginalized, impoverished nation spread across four countries. Richard Foltz will present the revised edition of his book A History of the Tajiks: Iranians of the East (2023), focusing on its two new chapters — on the Tajiks of Uzbekistan and on recent events affecting Tajiks in Afghanistan and Tajikistan, including the Taliban’s return to power, the COVID pandemic, and Kyrgyz-Tajik border clashes.
