This seminar will examine human rights and state repression in East-Central Europe and the former USSR before and after 1991. Nadia Boyadjieva will discuss how the Cold War shaped the implementation of international human rights regimes that emerged after the Second World War. Olena Nikolayenko will demonstrate how the Belarusian government has drawn on Soviet-era methods of social control to employ repressive tactics against regime opponents in the former Soviet republic.
