Political Life in Russia Since February 2022: A Firsthand Report from St. Petersburg, with Commentary on a Wagner Group Funeral

Sakharov Seminar on Human Rights
Event Format

Until October 2022, Denis Skopin was a professor of political science at St. Petersburg State University in Russia. He was fired for his opposition to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He left Russia in January 2023 and is now a scholar in exile in Berlin. As an expert on authoritarian regimes and dictatorships, he has thought deeply about trends in political life in Russia during the first year of the war. He will discuss these trends at the seminar and, with the aid of photographs, will offer commentary on a funeral he witnessed for a Wagner Group mercenary who was killed in Ukraine in December 2022.
