Dr. Aisulu Kulbayeva (Raspayeva) is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Linguistics Program at Northeastern University. Her primary research focus is identity construction, language maintenance, and child socialization in the under-studied communities of Kazakh-speaking groups, both in the U.S. and in Kazakhstan. She has published in such sociolinguistic journals as the Journal of Politeness Research, Narrative Inquiry, and Journal of Sociolinguistics. She completed her Ph.D. in Linguistics at Georgetown University. Her doctoral dissertation examined the identity construction of Kazakh people residing in a traditional Kazakh “aull” (a village/a community residing in a rural area) through the analysis of their mealtime narratives. She taught courses at Georgetown and Rice Universities before coming to Northeastern in 2021.
