John Malmstad is Samuel Hazzard Cross Research Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Emeritus, at Harvard University. He began his career at Columbia University before coming to Harvard in 1985 after receiving his Ph.D. in Slavic languages and literatures from Princeton University. He served as a dean at Harvard University in 1993-1994, and has published a biography on the life and work of the Russian poet Mikhail Kuzmin (1872–1936). He served as a Russian book-review editor for Slavic Review in 1975-1986 and an associate editor of Russian Review in 1986-1988, and has been a contributor to professional journals. He has served on the editorial boards of publications including Feniks, Opyty, Novoe Literaturnoe Obozrenie, Experiment, and Philologica Diaspora.
