Zaal Andronikashvili is a research fellow at the Center for Literary and Cultural Research (ZfL) in Berlin and a professor at Ilia State University in Tbilisi. Trained in history and philology in Tbilisi and Saarbrücken, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Göttingen in 2005. A literary scholar by training, his research focuses on narratology (the theory of the sujet) and on the interface between small/minor literature(s) and world literature; further areas include cultural semantics, political theology, and Soviet/post-Soviet cultural history, with an emphasis on Georgia in the wider Caucasus and Black Sea region. 

Alongside his academic work, he has published essays on Georgian politics and culture in German outlets such as the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitungtaz, and the journal OSTEUROPA. He is the author of three monographs: Die Erzeugung des dramatischen Textes. Ein Beitrag zur Theorie des Sujets (Erich Schmidt Verlag, 2008); Landna(h)me Georgien. Studien zur kulturellen Semantik (with Emzar Jgerenaia and Franziska Thun-Hohenstein, Kadmos, 2018); and Politikuri Teologia Sakartveloshi [Political Theology in Georgia] (Ilia State University Press, 2024). He is currently working on the book project “Literature in Georgia. Between Small Literature and World Literature."
