This second webinar, The Camera as a Weapon, will explore the power of photography in teaching about Genocide. Photographs do not merely capture or illustrate the historical past; they interpret it. A potential pitfall in teaching about the Holocaust is using Holocaust imagery without first teaching students how to evaluate and decode those images. This webinar introduces a series of competency expectations, such as recognizing perspective, intentionality, social and political context, elements of composition, expanding the frame, and asking, "Who took the photograph and why?" Applying these competencies will help students interpret propaganda, make historical comparisons, and develop media literacy.
