Ambassador (retired) Allan Mustard capped 38 years of diplomatic service as U.S. ambassador to Turkmenistan from January 2015 to June 2019. A fluent Russian speaker, Ambassador Mustard spent roughly a third of his career as an American diplomat either in the former Soviet Union or in Washington dealing with that region. His other postings included Vienna, where he covered seven countries of Central Europe; Istanbul, where he covered Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon; Mexico City; and New Delhi, where he covered India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. He was chairman of the board of the OpenStreetMap Foundation 2019-2021 and is currently on the board of directors of American Youth Philharmonic Orchestras. He is also co-manager of an energy startup, Trans Caspian US Resources.
