The Master of Arts in Regional Studies—Russia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia (REECA) is a two-year program that offers advanced training in the history, politics, culture, society, and languages of this region.
Rachel Applebaum is associate professor of Russian and East European history at Tufts University. Her first book, Empire of Friends: Soviet Power and Socialist Internationalism in Cold War Czechoslovakia, was published by Cornell University Press in 2019. It won the 2020 Radomír Luža Prize. As of early 2025, she was completing a second book, with the support of a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship, tentatively titled A Global History of Russian: From Soviet World Language to Putin’s “Russian World.” She has published articles related to this project in Kritika: Explorations in Russian and Eurasian History and Cahiers du Monde russe.
