Associate Professor of Political Science, Skidmore College

Yelena Biberman is an associate professor of political science at Skidmore College, nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s South Asia Center, new voice at the Andrew W. Marshall Foundation, and associate at Harvard University’s Davis Center. Her current project is a chamber opera entitled Afghan Good Enough. She is also writing a book on biotechnology and great power rivalry. Her previous book, Gambling with Violence: State Outsourcing of War in Pakistan and India, was published by Oxford University Press in 2019. 

Biberman’s research has appeared in academic journals, such as the Journal of Peace Research, Journal of Strategic Studies, Asian Security, Strategic Studies Quarterly, Modern Asian Studies, Terrorism and Political Violence, and Political Science Quarterly, as well as in policy and mainstream media, such as the Military Review, Foreign Policy, Texas National Security Review, Georgetown Journal of International Affairs, and Washington Post. Her work has been supported by numerous grants, including from the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, United States Institute of Peace, Fulbright Fellowship, American Institute of Pakistan Studies, and Smith Richardson Foundation. She received her B.A. from Wellesley College, Master’s from Harvard University, and Ph.D. from Brown University. She has also worked as a journalist in Moscow, Russia.
