Markus Vaher is researching anti-authoritarian resistance in Russia and Belarus, as well as the democratic opposition that has found exile in Europe. He is intrigued by dissident literature and the recent history of democratization in Eastern Europe. Originally from Estonia, he also takes an interest in Baltic-Russian relations since the Soviet collapse, particularly Russia’s compatriot policy. Prior to entering the REECA Program, Markus worked as a research assistant on a team at the University of Chicago, investigating anti-war sabotage acts in war-time Russia. This spring, he completed his military service in the Estonian Navy.
